The Stationary Steam Engines Websites

Website.

*********************************

September 2006 edition

Over 1500 sites for engines in 62 countries.

This website is an attempt to collate all known (to me ) websites that relate to existing stationary steam engines. It is hoped to update it regularly and I would be very grateful for any constructive comments, information etc. As a monoglot English speaker I am aware that the coverage for non-english  sites is extremely patchy although it is fairly clear that an obsession with all forms of steam engine is a very Anglo-Saxon/Dutch/German characteristic anyway.

All the  sites listed  have one thing in common. They relate to real sites containing stationary steam engines . Many are in their original workplaces, either preserved now as museums , abandoned or still in use. In the former case they have often been joined by other engines uprooted from their sites for preservation and display. The original engines may be well outnumbered by newcomers but the site is still classified as “On Site”. On the other sites all the engines present will have been brought in for preservation and the site is thus classed as a museum. In some cases engines have been installed in the preservation era to replace original engines that have been removed. These sites , where known, are classed as museums.

A number of museums are known to have engines in store but if they are not known to be on display I have not  included them.

I am also aware of a number of engines/museums containing engines/etc that I have not listed. This is because I have not been able to find any relevant internet site to list. If you know of any that would be suitable please e-mail me with details and I'll put them in.

For the purposes of the list marine engines have been  ignored although marine type engines used for industrial purposes are included.

The quality of the internet sites varies widely. Some are just passing references in tourist listings that may well not even mention the presence of an engine on the real site, others are lovingly created tributes by enthusiasts. However , so far as is known, all sites contain stationary steam. More than one listing for a particular site/engine is not an error. There will be several complementary internet sites relating to that engine/site.

All links are tested regularly with the excellent link tracer Xenu Link Sleuth (freeware from http://home.snafu.de/tilman). Naturally this cannot identify links that are functional but no longer relate to stationary steam engines. Do let me know of any errors or dead links you discover. We are all human.

THE RATING SCHEME

All engine sites have now been rated on a 0 to 5 star basis. The grades are as follows:

No Star      =     Broken Link

*                =      Engine(s) known to be on site but the website does not admit to their presence.

**             =       Engine(s) referred to or shown in pictures.

***          =       Text and Pictures OR detailed text.

****        =       Detailed descriptions and/or comprehensive photographic coverage.

*****     =        My personal favourites. Usually four star rating with bells and whistles but not always.

It may seem unnecessary to retain dead sites in the listing but they are there for three reasons, laziness on my part, the possibility that they will return to life, and , more meaningfully, that they may be retrievable using the website "The Wayback Machine"

If you feel your favourite site has been unjustly graded or you think a site has been over-starred please do get in touch.

There have been some suggestions that the present black on brown format is difficult to read on some machines, a blue on green scheme is available as an alternative. Click HERE to change colour schemes if you have problems.

The sheer size of the site has forced me to redesign the architecture. To access the links click on the appropriate link above.
